Chapter Fourteen

That’s what they did, take a long lap around the center of Hilo before he parked at a waterfront park, a place June didn’t recognize. A large hotel sat nearby and coconut fronds shook and waved in the tradewinds blowing in off the water. The evening sky had cleared and lost much of its humidity from the afternoon. A brightly lit cruise ship was just leaving harbor not far away. With the windows rolled down, June was quite comfortable in the car, especially since it had bucket seats. She reclined hers one notch and relaxed her head back.

“This is nice, even if there aren’t any submarines racing by,” she muttered, taking a glance at Jason for a reaction. She pointed a hand out the window. “What’s this place over here?”

“Coconut Island, a part of the park. Wiped out by a tsunami a long time ago. Guys go fish off the rocks, nice for picnics. This is as far as most tourists walk from the cruise boat then turn around go back. Others take vans into town for shopping.”

“You guys are kind of out in the middle of the ocean here.” Her eyes drifted closed when she took a deep breath. “Coconut Island. Sounds nice. I’d like to live on a place called Coconut Island.”

“You know, June, I know almost nothing about you except what’s on your rap sheet and that you’re here for a week from LA.”

“You saw the website printouts the Chief made that first day in the police station. Not much more to tell than that. Job at the hospital, little ranch house in the hills, broken down old Toyota Corolla, stubborn vegetarian. I run, drink too much wine, and aggressively shirk my duties to produce a male heir to the family throne.”

“No kids, no husband?”

“Not even having the fun of practicing.”

Jason turned in his bucket seat to face her a bit. “I Googled your name. Hope you don’t mind.”

“I’d be disappointed if you didn’t. Find anything interesting?” June asked.

“You’re more than just another employee at the hospital. Your name and picture is plastered all over your hospital’s website and the internet.”

“Well, the other neurosurgeons there aren’t as pretty as me…but only because they’re all men.”

“And you used to be some kind of model?”

June pointed to crow’s feet and smile lines. “Not any more. These things tend to doom a girl’s career in front of a fashion camera.”

“Sorry, but can we talk about something else?” June asked to interrupt his interview. She knew from experience that’s all it would become, an interview, especially if it was a cop conducting it. She’d had enough of fashion, leaving it behind. Somehow, just the thought of it made her jealous of her sister’s bank account.

“Sure, whatever.”

She reached up to the little dome light on the ceiling of the vehicle and switched it on. smiled at him. “Okay, you’ve answered a lot of questions for. I could do the same for you. You already know that my twin sister made it to the big time in fashion.
